a trip with taiwanese

Out of spite, I went to a trip with Taiwanese young people. We spent 3 days together.

Honestly, the trip wasn’t that exciting. We went to Zhaoqing, Kaiping and Jiangmen in two days, and spent most of the day in the bus. Even when we got off the bus and when inside the places of interest, we traveled by tour bus and seldom walked. What I gained most was the experience communicating with people from Taiwan. Most of them are of my age. Some are younger, I think the youngest are about 18, just graduated from high school. Others are about my age or a bit older. So we are free to talk.

7th of july, I went back to the main campus to show them around the campus, so were three of fourth-yr students. We spent like an hour or so to go from the south gate to the north gate. When we reached the north gate, we took pics together. And they called their bus, about to leave. But the vice-chairman of Guangdong Tainwan union invited us to join them, travel with them if we were free. I was free and they urged me to join in.

in the afternoon, we went to Chen’s Temple(Chen Jia Ci). It was a shame that I’d never been there before as I spent 2 yrs in Guangzhou already. But yes, it was my first time there, so I wasn’t that bored. Then we headed for the university town, and I, for sure, was the tour guide. But we got lost when we looked for the museum. I introduced the schools as we passed in the bus. We got to the museum finally, it was amazing, the buildings were fabulous. Pity that my camera ran out of power by then, so I missed all the beauties.

They invited me to go on with them the next day and I could bring one or two friends with me. I thought I was free coz the meeting that was supposed to take place the following afternoon put off till the next next day so I agreed to go with them as I hadn’t been to Zhaoqing before.

The next day I arrived at their hotel by time and we started our trip to Zhaoqing. By then, after a day’s together, they could recognize me somehow and said hello when we met in the hall.

Forget to mention that most of the Taiwanese are male, and I brought two girls with me.

We went to QiXing Yan in the morning. We didn’t stay there for long though. We didn’t have to walk, we got tour bus. I didn’t like it, I’d rather walk. It was most boring, the tour guide’s Chinese was so bad, even worse than the Taiwanese. Honestly, to speak to them reminded me of some tv series shot by Taiwanese. Esp. when I talked with some of them, it was very funny.

We only stayed in QiXingYan for about an hour or so. then we headed for supper. We went to a restaurant, environment was ok, and taste fine. This Zhaoqing’s Taiwanese Union Branch’s leaders who received us, took us to supper. So before we could eat, every leader gave a short speech. The audience were responsible for applause. The audience referred to us.

In the afternoon we went to Ding Lake Mount. Very pretty and cool. We first visited the huge tripot. I took a pic there indicating that I’m all woman, that I’m conscience clear. Then the lake. Actually I was very much confused. I just followed the tour guide I didn’t even know what I was doing or where I was. I remembered we went to XiangYun temple somehow, and was shown around. Then we got 10 minutes for relaxation. 3 of us went to toilet. When we came back, everybody seemed to have bought bean curd flower(chinglish, dou fu hua). As it was extremely hot, we didn’t want to have something hot. But then the other 3 boys invited us to eat, they got two. But they themselves were not eating. I tried a bite. It didn’t taste good. Then they told me that there was a poor granny eating the bean curd flower that some one left and asked me to give mine to her. I hesitated for a while and did so. she said thank you for many times. When I came back, they wanted me to offer her theirs. I didn’t do follow and began to leave.

Finally, after a comparatively long walk, we came to the famous lake. First thing to catch my sight was the waterfall. It was amazing, so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself to photos. But it was a pity that I didn’t fetch the spring water my friend told me earlier.

I meant that was the last day that I be with them. But they insisted that if we were free, we come the next day.  As I’d never been to Kaiping or Jiangmen, and I didn’t want to leave so early, so I said I would try my best to come. Since I had company, I came for the third day.

In the morning, we went to KaiPing. The main point of the trip was the carve building(diao lou). I was wordless when I saw those beautifully decorated house. very grave. It’s bulletproof. There are many stories. At the top of the building, the scenery was very broad and graceful.

The name of the village was ZiLI village, indicating that people there were independent.

The next stop was LiYuan(立园). The original owner was a businessman and very rich. He had married for four times and 21 children. He got a garden of his own and several houses. The houses were very comfortable to live in and well-kept even now after about a century.

Then we went to have lunch. The outside of the restaurant was fine, but inside wasn’t that good. I couldn’t praise the food also. Chinese Taiwanese Union in Kaiping also came to greet us and have lunch with us. People were kind, though. But at the end of the meal, Mr. He and the leader of the Union in Kaiping talked about salary. And they discussed about it. A little bit offensive. At first I was still joking around. Then I kept silence and listened to their dialogue. Then Mr. He laughed me for my facial expressions. I didn’t know why for I really didn’t notice that. but we were kidding most of the time so kind of very familiar with each other.

In the afternoon our destination was Jiangmen. Birds’ heaven was very famous thanks to Lao She’s article. We read about it when we were young and looked forward very much to visiting it some day. And in the afternoon, my dream came true though I’ve long forgotten about it.

The tour guide in Jiangmen was new, I guess, from what she behaved that day. She was timid and not familiar with the places of interest.. she told us a lot about the Kui tree. And we visited a small house where some people were making fans with Kui leaves. This was exactly the place where I had a boss. There were a lot of fans on sale there. And I joked with a Taiwanese ( I don’t know his name) , encourage them to buy. But they were very expensive indeed. And he adversely came to persuade me into buying one and didn’t let go. We had an argue and I got speechless for the other boys came to help. Actually, he was enough to get me embarrassed. Then I said that I didn’t have income if he gave me some, I would be able to buy.  And so he became my boss and promised me a salary with 4 tai yuan a month, equals to 1 yuan. Because of the argue, we were the final one to leave for bus. We were still arguing when we came back to the bus. But as we didn’t sit close, the argument stopped eventually.

Inside the birds’ heaven, he started the fire again. I talked to Mr. He about his forgetting get me an ice-cream when we were in the middle of the river. He said he didn’t find me and at the current circumstances he couldn’t get one for me. Then this young man interrupted, he would get some water with the empty ice-cream package for me. I said that wasn’t an ice-cream. He argue that it was, since there was some ice cream left. I said if you dropped into the water and get it, I would eat it. He laughed at my silliness, that he didn’t have to drop inside the water. Anyway, I was fooled again. Off the boat, we came to a shop. The owner charged a lot for the products, he asked me to make a bargain since I could speak Cantonese. Bargaining wasn’t the thing that I am good at, and I didn’t think that they really wanted it. Meanwhile, some journalists from the local TV came to interview them Taiwanese about this activity. He dragged me to go and got interviewed and said loudly: “She is Taiwanese, interview her!” I’m speechless. Of  course I’m not Taiwanese. I dragged back, urged him to be interviewed. Fortunately that none of the journalist paid any attention to us. How embarrassed! I was thinking of murdering him if I could.

The last dinner was in Jiangmen. Much better than the supper, but I wasn’t very much fond of it.

Then it was time to go back to Guangzhou. I chatted with a student who had been in Guangzhou for 6 years and very impressed by his ideas. And also shocked. He’d been aboard many times and he told me what he saw, how he felt. He would go to Beijing with others the next day and would be back quite soon after the summer camp.

This was the last time I was with them. Honestly, I had a wonderful time. besides friendship I gained from them, I also knew some ideas they carry, about political issues. Whenever we talked about it, I felt a mood of nervousness. But the point is that they support the one china policy.

It was a wonderful experience to greet different people and meet new ideas.

Three days ended, so was their trip in Guangzhou, but I believe our friendship never ends.
